Specific Blurring Style

on 1/7/2013, 10:01 pm
Yeah, so I've been trying to figure Yuu's blurring technique in his old sprite videos.
Here's one for a frame of reference...

I've been trying to figure out how to motion blur his sprites like he does in his videos.
I'm not particularly crazy about the motion blurs when sonic is dodging gunfire, just the one Yuu uses the most when there's a moving BG.

This is the closest I've been able to get -_-

Yeah, I know I suck, but could anyone provide me with a better looking procedure to motion blur sprites on a moving bg?

I'm not sure I follow.

Are you saying that he blurs the X and Y axes?

Dunno if the embed works.
Also, I wasn't so sure about what you asked, those two styles are alike. Zoom in on Kenshin and check it out, but I think Vegeta's the most closer to the one you want.

I think Vegeta's is a closer in a sense but in actuality Kenshin's looks better, imo and I'm pretty sure I know how you did that...

Actually, after comparing your Kenshin and his Sonic I see that one BIG property of it, is that it needs to have sprites that are moving. Both your Kenshin and his Sonic are actually running whereas my Rouge and your Vegeta are kinda stiff.

But it still seams like Yuu is doing something extra with his blurring for example this video:

There are several spots where he's blurring a single sprite but somehow it still looks more animated. I wonder what his trick is...or if there's a trick at all...I could be overthinking it lol.

Irregardless, thanks for taking the time to post, GEAR. You've helped me out quite a bit as of recently. haha

Same to you, Tal.

You realize he animated everything in photoshop right?
That's what gave him the ability to do those fancy blurs.

I had definitely considered that he had used the smudge tool from Photoshop, however, I was under the impression that the same effect could be achieved through Gimp or maybe even Paint.Net. If Photoshop is the only program capable of producing his blurs then so be it.

Thank you, Eric, and thank you, Leo, for the insightful info.

No problem man, glad it helped a bit.
Also, yeah you can do it in GIMP, I think he blurs half of the sprites sequences at different range.

Yep, I can't really figure out how to do this...

The problem is that whatever program I use to blur, ends up really pixelated... Is there a way to blur without everything getting pixelated?

Not really.. it's because you are dealing with sprites, those are low-res and so the effects that creates.
The most hi-res blur is in Flash or in After Effects (in my experience).
I did this a few times, you have the bitmap of your sprite. Make it a MC. Blur it as you desire and then make the blurred MC into another symbol, you enter at it (edit mode) and go to Export, Export Image and select .PNG (is the one that saves the quality the most).

This seems to be the case, but his method of blurring is still pretty difficult. Actually, it isn't that it's difficult but that I don't understand it

And now I've lost interest in it -_- (this is why I never finish anything)

lol okay
In Vegeta's one I blurred half of the body (of course externally) of all the poses for the dash sequence (just two lol) and I did a small tween, resizing it backwards.

On Kenshin's I put the normal running sequence, and another blurred blended sequence some pixels behind it. And I added some alpha.

I hope I explained myself clearly.
