And it's not about just making fancy backgrounds to impress your peers.

Eric's just saying that you guys should put more effort in your stuff if you're using sprites.
Like when I see badly made sprite comics. Okay, not everyone is a PS god but come on. You're not even drawing your own stuff so it can't be really that hard.

Those mountains really piss me off.

Specifically, them being brighter the further to the left they are.

It doesn't work like that. This is the SUN we're talking about. A few dozen kilometres (Depending on how far back they are) isn't going to make much of a difference. In fact, since the Sun is at the left of the screen, presumably the centre would be quite a distance away, where the Sun is in the middle. Furthermore, even if this did make sense, apparently you want the lighting to change when they move; This is wrong, as the mountains aren't even moving, it's YOU/the camera that is moving. If I could change the sun's position, you can sure as hell bet it wouldn't be hidden behind the clouds all the time. I suppose there's still reflection logic but even that has its limits. In fact, assuming you had fixed this and kept the lighting on the mountains as it is right now, sure enough it would be pretty much pitch black by the time he travelled any sort of distance.

Other than that this looks great.
