    Meh I like to "build up my empire" so to speak. As Brosif said, If you can do whatever you please from the start, it's not really challenging. I guess it's a bit more of a Sandbox game than anything else, minus the building which makes it wierd.

    that's exactly my point plus they left out a lot of good stuff from saints row 2, like the ability to pick up anything (and i mean anything) and use it as a weapon and house customization.

    Re: Saints Row IV

    Post by RnR on 8/26/2013, 12:28 pm

    Allow me to throw in my two cents;

      Being a heavy Saints Row 1 and 2 fan-boy, I considered the third to be the black mark of the series. I didn't exactly feel the over the top atmosphere the game was trying to create with its activities, characters, mission structure, etc. Instead of fighting 4 rival gangs like you did in the other games, you were a pitted  against a super gang made of the 3 smaller factions. Already the challenge was eliminated because the conflict between rival gangs was gone and it felt like you were fighting one gang instead of three.  The actual missions of the game were replaced by activities, so instead of doing things like going to power plants to get some radio activate waste and burn one of the rival gang leaders faces, you were forced to stuff like trail blazing and mayhem, with the others characters constantly assuring you that it was doing something beneficial to the story.   I felt the franchise had stranded too far from its more grounded roots and became this wacky, nonsensical joke that was determined to continue riding it's newly found gravy train with biscuit wheels.

    When Saints Row 4 was announced I figured that my assumption was correct. After defeating several gangs and becoming a corporate giant, the Saints "evolved" from a street gang into political   powerhouses with you as the president. Now with that I was ready to see reviewers tear this game to pieces because I was certain that smokescreen that was SR:TT had blown over and everyone would the next game for what it truly was. However, publications like Eurogamer and Game Informer were giving this game 8's, 9's and 10's like they were giving out candy. Even one of my favorite game reviewers Angry Joe gave the game a solid 8/10. This blew away because his review of SR:TT was brutal. For the the fourth game, he praised the gameplay, the writing,  the wit, and the story.

    When Joe had praised the story by saying it was better than the third game, I just had to check to it out for myself. So I bought the game Thursday of last week, beaten by Sunday, and to say the least I was pretty entertained. I found myself glued to my Xbox like the thing was giving out crack, the game was definitely a step up from Saints Row The Third. The writing was definitely better, replacing toilet humor with tongue-in-cheek references to various sci-fi and pop culture films. The gameplay was like a combo of Saints Row, Crackdown, and PROTOTYPE. Not only do get to mess around with an abundance of weapons to waste enemies, you also get superpowers! Initially I was pissed when Volition announced that super powers were being added into the game, why the hell would I need a gun if I can just freeze blast and super stomp the hell out people. In response I was met with a grating STFU, because your powers and your weapons blend together like waffles and syrup.The aliens in the game are wicked tough, so you'll have combine both your powers and gun-play to clear them out.  You can freeze your enemies in one instance and use your weapons to shatter them, usually in one hit kills. You can set your foes on fire and fill em full of lead to dish out some extra damage.

    The mission structure and activities have been improved since SR3, since you're in virtual Steelport you'll be sent on missions meant to disrupt the virtual network. You'll have to double back between the virtual world and the real world in order complete missions. Some missions involve you saving members of your crew that that main antagonist ZInyak has captured, and in those missions you will fighting with that crew member against their greatest fear. Now this part fun for me because some of those missions involved awesome throw backs to previous Saints Row games; you may be fighting old gangs like the Brother Hood, The Sons of Samedi, The Ronin, and the freaking Vice Kings! The mission also do some pretty good parodies of others game like Metal Gear Solid and Streets of Rage. The mission feel like love letters to fans of the previous titles and fans of older games in general. Hell the whole game felt like a love letter to the fans in general, thanking them for sticking by the franchise for so many years. The activities offer more variety this time around, incorporating your powers into them and adding variations of past activities.  You have activity like UFO Mayhem, Super Powered Fight Club, Super Powered Trail Blazing, many of the activities were a lot of fun.

    The dialogue is a lot better in this one as well, since you're forced to live in a space ship with your crew, you learn alot more about them and how mission in previous game affected them.  You'll be exposed how the events of SR3 affected Shaundi, you'll find out how King has been feeling since SR2, you'll have a blast playing in Matt Miller's Nyte Blade fanfiction. Hell, you'll even see some rather deep emotion from your character, learning how the deaths of his friends and past experiences affected them. It was good knowing that the characters in the game are actually characters and not useless throw-aways.

    All in all, the game took all of my animosity and cynicism towards it, placed it onto the ground, and curb stomped it. It told me that I was just going to have to deal with the new direction the game has taken and I shouldn't let my opinion of the third game affect my opinion on this one. With that being said, I like Saints Row 4 and I urge fans of the previous titles to check it out not just for yourself, but to see the series end on what I believe to be a good note. I also want fans to understand that grounded era of Saints Row is gone and never coming back, it no longer pits you against other gangs, but it throws all sorts of fun and crazy shit your way that'll have even then biggest SR1 and 2 fans chuckle. If you want serious, grounded games, play GTA V when it comes out. However, if you're looking for some of the best open-world, sandbox styled, over the top, clever wackiness, Saints Row 4 is a great place to start.

    Overall Game Score: 8/10
